Construction plans are filled with small icons, lines, and abbreviations — and if you don’t know what they mean, you’re guessing. I am creating a quick reference guide to help you understand the most common symbols and abbreviations so you can confidently navigate any set of plans. Here are a few for the time being.
Why Symbols and Abbreviations Matter

Common Blueprint Symbols:
Doors – arc lines show the swing direction.
Windows – thin rectangles or lines with breaks.
Electrical Outlets – circle with two parallel lines.
Light Fixtures – variations of circles and lines.
Plumbing Fixtures – stylized icons for sinks, toilets, tubs.
Common Abbreviations:
AFF – Above Finished Floor
CL – Center Line
OPNG – Opening
TYP – Typical
Ø – Diameter
