Construction plans are filled with small icons, lines, and abbreviations — and if you don’t know what they mean, you’re guessing. I am creating a quick reference guide to help you understand the most common symbols and abbreviations so you can confidently navigate any set of plans. Here are a few for the time being.

Why Symbols and Abbreviations Matter

Common Blueprint Symbols:

• Doors – arc lines show the swing direction.

• Windows – thin rectangles or lines with breaks.

• Electrical Outlets – circle with two parallel lines.

• Light Fixtures – variations of circles and lines.

• Plumbing Fixtures – stylized icons for sinks, toilets, tubs.

Common Abbreviations:

• AFF – Above Finished Floor

• CL – Center Line

• OPNG – Opening

• TYP – Typical

• Ø – Diameter
